The Flea Theater |
The Flea Theater, an Off-Off-Broadway institution offering provocative and eclectic programs in Tribeca since 1996, retained Levien & Company to manage the transformation of a building containing parts of the 18th Century New York Hospital into a new permanent home on Thomas Street. The 11,500 SF state-of-the-art complex holds three uniquely configured and intimately-scaled theaters – The Sam, The Pete and The Siggy (all named for theatrical royalty). These are accompanied by a welcoming lobby and artist-friendly back-of-house spaces, enabling the new facility to offer the entire Off-Off-Broadway community venues for theater, music and dance performances.
Levien successfully led The Flea team through the challenges of obtaining new power and water connections on one of Manhattan’s few private streets, raising the roof of the second floor 13’ to create a 23-foot high ceiling in the 120-seat concert theater, coordinating multiple sources of public and private financing for both acquisition and renovation, and fitting technologically advanced infrastructure into the tightest of spaces. LEED Silver designation is anticipated.
