Museum of the Moving Image
New York, NY

Levien was retained in 2007 to manage this ambitious expansion project that nearly doubled the size of the existing museum. The budget was established based on a partnership with the City (owner of the museum) and with the board and administration responsible for raising a certain percentage of the funds. About a year into construction with the project bid and physically underway, due to concerns that the fund-raising goals might not be met because of the recession, the team was instructed to run two parallel tracks; to continue as if all the funds could be raised, and with a reduced scope that could be implemented if the funds were unavailable. All but 10% of the funds were raised and the museum opened to critical acclaim.

There is a new grand entrance, lobby and bookstore, a landscaped courtyard, 267-seat film theater, 68-seat screening room, educational facilities, food service and exhibition galleries. In addition, the first floor of the existing building has been completely renovated. The project is certified LEED Silver, and has also been recognized with several industry awards.
