Friends Seminary |
Friends is a 230+ year-old Quaker school and one of the oldest continuously-operating K-12 co-educational institutions in New York City. We completed this first phase of a multi-phase renovation and expansion of its historic structures on East 16th Street in 2007. The project was extremely complex for several reasons; the buildings at the time were not truly owned by Friends but leased from the Quakers New York Quarterly Meeting and required their approval to be renovated; the campus was created via the combination of multiple buildings and did not meet ADA requirements; and the school had to remain operational throughout the project. The ADA elevator solution is quite unique. The team was able to gain approval from the City to install a rare 3-door passenger elevator with 21 stops over a five-floor rise. Upon completion of this first phase, the school had constructed a new library, numerous classrooms, new core bathrooms, a communal staircase and the aforementioned elevator, in addition to establishing a more dynamic street presence.
