This Upper West Side school was expanded into a newly acquired adjacent building increasing their program space by 50%. The existing school building is composed of two structures and houses classrooms for Pre-K through 6th grade. The adjacent structure is a narrow, 5-story building that was used as a multi-family residence with separate apartments. A new glass rear addition was constructed to connect the two buildings. The floors of the two buildings did not align so a new stair and elevator with split stops provides the connection between them. This complicated work needed to be accomplished in a small area and without disturbance to school functions. The program also included a rooftop addition that will provide much needed space for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math) programs. Student safety was of course the key concern and the project was phased to ensure workmen and students never interacted.
