Nightingale-Bamford School |
Levien was hired to provide full project management services on the renovation and expansion of this 93 year-old K-12 all girls school on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The school purchased two four-story townhouses adjacent to their existing building and combined the structures by demolishing the interior structure while supporting the façade, which was required to be retained because of the building’s location in a Landmark district. By demolishing the existing floors, the new floors were able to be rebuilt to align with the existing structure, eliminating the need for ramps or stairs. Parallel to this major re-structuring of the buildings, Levien managed the renovation of the existing school building over the course of three summers. Levien’s expertise in school projects - which are typically phased and on strict timelines – was instrumental to ensuring that the school opened on time each September. Levien also interfaced with neighbors and negotiated a key license agreement with an adjacent building to allow for access to the rear of the site, as the new building was against the lot line and access was otherwise limited.
The project achieved LEED Certification and incorporated many environmentally-conscious measures including planted rooftops, reuse of storm water drainage for irrigation, efficient mechanical equipment and locally-sourced materials.
